Its Finaly Over
So the semester had ended, the curtain has fallen, and the show and all of its wonderful memories and experiences are behind me. I cant begin to express my gratitude to all those who help me in the production. I learned so much, not only about theatre, directing, designing, and teaching, but about myself, and I am truly thankful for that. ...and it has closed!
Well, here we are: Monday evening, and I think everyone is catching up on sleep and homework by now. Roommates and house mates are happy to have their friends back home again. The fence is down, the rocks are gone, Walter and the rest of the house plants are sleeping in the green houses once again. (Thanks again to Horticulture Club and Dr. Laura Jones for letting us babysit their plants for a week!)
I feel like I've learned a LOT from this show -- it was really nice to have an upperclassmen as a Director for my first Stage Managing adventure! (Lots of patience on Dustin's part, and he was able to give me a good intro to Stage Managing at CSU.)
Cast and Crew were exceptional to work with (in my opinion) -- there was pretty much ZERO "drama," which is a rarity for a group that gets to seven-day-a-week rehearsals by the end of it.
Well done, kids, and thanks again!

It has begun!
We're two down, three to go!
The last week (and-then-some) has flown by. The cast and crew is behind on homework and running on caffeine... but tonight's STANDING OVATION was worth it, wouldn't you think?
Opening night went well, with a good performance and a good audience -- there was a bit of laughter at the comic relief, and quite a few tears by the end. The cast and crew managed to shave off 17 minutes of the show between the Preview and the first show, a result from the everyone working on their pick-ups and some extra scene-shift practice. Performance number two had a more energetic audience; sometimes their laughter was a bit surprising, but by end we could hear sobs over the monitor up in the booth.
The whole team is really doing a great job. You know that something was done right when the crew has to have tissues backstage for the last scene!

It's real.
I'm finding my writing is a wee bit different than the other posts here. Sorry, it's just how I think.

This is all so real. Every story, every myth I heard in high school is here, now. In my face.
And I know I am a freshman. This is it, the theatre, I get all that.
But it's one thing to hear, and another to feel. Another to experience. People here actually give a damn. They will actually say, "Josh, that sucks. What you just did, right there, sucked. " Thanks. But I suppose this is the only place where I hear those three words people dare not speak elsewhere. I love you.
Yes, it's casual. No, rehearsals are not crazy orgies. Well, there is the sex scene Krystal seems to enjoy... Never mind.
But it's real, it's beautiful, it's unafraid. We live for the moment, we live for the feeling. Last night Dustin looked at the four walls of the theatre and said welcome to your home. Welcome.
This is it. There can be no walls now. Just us. Just us and something real.

The first run through...
Tonight, we made it through our first run-through: well done, all! It was a good way to throw us back into the swing of things after two evenings without rehearsal.
The Friday/Saturday load in seemed to have been extremely successful; the show has made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. We now have a chain link fence, some nasty dripping pipes, a hung-and-focused light plot, and one TON of rocks! Not to mention a cast that can make it through the show with no line or blocking prompts, 85% of the props, and nearly the whole wardrobe.
...and somehow, there's still not enough time in the day! (slash night.)
We officially lost one of our numbers today. It brings up a number of frustrating challenges for Dustin, the first challenge being to re-cast the role. Liz joined us in rehearsal today and read for the Captain, but the final verdict was that there is no getting around the fact that the role is for a male. The second challenge falls to Erik, who has stepped up to the plate and will be memorizing the Captain's lines in addition to his own. Then, part of the cast will start meeting for extra hours (either before or after the regularly scheduled rehearsals) so that we can re-block and rehearse not only normal blocking, but a large amount of stage combat.
This week will be the turn-over from cast-based rehearsals to tech-based rehearsals, beginning with Paper Tech on Halloween Night. (I will be in costume. I hope that all else present will join me in the festivities. :D)
